Construction is due to start on two major road duplication projects this year across the ACT, with the Development Application for Athllon Drive now approved and the William Hovell Drive site being prepared for construction to start in the coming months.
The ACT Government, in partnership with the Australian Government, is making significant investment in road infrastructure right across the city – reducing congestion and improving travel times. This also includes the Monaro Highway Upgrade currently underway.
Along with building new roads, the annual road resurfacing and maintenance program continues on existing roads to ensure the safety of commuters and other road users.
We are currently in one of the most significant periods of investment in infrastructure across the ACT covering transport, education, health, the arts and housing. An important part of this is the investments we are making in road infrastructure to support our growing city.
Athllon Drive
The Development Application for the Athllon Drive Duplication is now approved. This project will see the duplication of 2.4km of the southern section between Sulwood Drive and Drakeford Drive in Tuggeranong, reducing road congestion between Woden an Tuggeranong.
Enabling works are also now complete for this project, including the widening and lighting of the C4 community path between Atkins Street and Drakeford Drive, new footpath connections and upgrade of minor paths, while utility enabling works are now complete.
A tender for main construction works will be issued in the coming months with main construction works expected to start later in the year.
William Hovell Drive
Main construction work is scheduled to start on the William Hovell Drive Duplication in the coming months to duplicate 4.5km of William Hovell Drive from Drake-Brockman Drive to John Gorton Drive. This will improve safety, travel times and relieve congestion for road users in Canberra's western suburbs.
Monaro Highway
The Monaro Highway Upgrade is progressing well with the new southbound Lanyon Drive flyover currently scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, and construction continuing on other packages beyond this time.
The new eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge is now complete, and concrete poured on a new flyover and interchange at the intersection of Lanyon Drive and the Monaro Highway in Hume.
The project will improve road safety and create faster travel for Tuggeranong, the Woden Valley and southern NSW.
Road resurfacing and maintenance program
The ACT Government's annual road resurfacing program is continuing across Canberra, alongside major road project investments.
Resurfacing is essential to protect and strengthen roads damaged by weather and regular traffic, helping ensure safe and reliable travel for everyone.
This season, more than one million square metres of road will be resurfaced. Crews have passed the halfway point, with recent works completed on a northbound section of the Tuggeranong Parkway at Weston Creek and along the Barton Highway at Crace.
Weather permitting, the next stage of works on major roads will start this month on Canbera Avenue in Fyshwick and towards the Queanbeyan border. Lane closures and reduced speed limits will apply during these works.
Motorists are reminded to slow down in roadwork zones, even when crews are not on site. Temporary speed limits keep all road users safe, and equipment may remain in place between shifts.
In addition to resurfacing, the ACT Government carries out daily maintenance such as pothole repairs, sign replacement and general road repairs. Crews have also been prioritising storm clean-up in Woden, including debris removal and street sweeping.
The Government also runs a proactive inspection program for key arterial roads and responds to community reports of dangerous potholes or damage. Canberrans can report issues through the Fix My Street portal.

Quotes attributable to ACT Government Minister for City and Government Services, Tara Cheyne MLA:
"The Government is committed to building and upgrading our road network, and making it easier to travel across the Territory.
"With our population set to increase over the next 20 years, it's vital that we have infrastructure in place to support that growth.
"Complementing our infrastructure investment is our annual road resurfacing program. This is preventative maintenance that helps Canberrans to keep moving safely. In addition to major resurfacing projects, our crews are out on the network every day repairing potholes, replacing damaged signs and responding to the impacts of severe weather. This work helps protect our infrastructure and supports safer journeys in every suburb, no matter how you're travelling.
"I want to thank the community for their patience as crews carry out this important work across the city. You can support the work of our crews by slowing down and following all directions when roadwork is underway."
