The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to providing a modern local government legislative framework that enables councils to meet their responsibilities and meet community expectations.
While Tasmania has changed significantly over the past 25 years, and despite substantial social, economic and technological changes, the Local Government Act has largely remained the same.
Following substantial consultation of our review into the Local Government Act, submissions have now been made public.
The 51 major policy reforms under consideration by the Government in shaping a new local government legislative framework include:
- electoral processes;
- community engagement and consultation;
- transparency and accountability in council activities and decisions;
- consistency across councils and services; and
- stronger oversight and intervention measures.
Almost 800 responses were received during the consultation process demonstrating the high value placed on local government by Tasmanians.
As sector and community views play an important part of shaping reform, I would like to thank all those who have taken the time to discuss the reform proposals, take the survey and prepare submissions.
The Government will now consider feedback, particularly where differing views were raised or reforms were not supported, before determining its final policy position.
