Moira Shire residents are proving they really know their waste, recording outstanding results in the first 12 months since the introduction of the new kerbside collection system.
Over the past year, the Moira community has helped boost the waste diversion rate from 55 per cent to an impressive 65.8 per cent.
The results include seeing an impressive 1,098 tonnes less waste sent to landfill and 964 tonnes more organics recovered and processed.
Households have embraced the four-stream waste and recycling system, with contamination in the organics stream remaining consistently low - clear evidence that residents are sorting right and keeping it clean and green.
Alongside kerbside reforms, residents are also making great use of the Container Deposit Scheme, Council's Recycling Stations, and the Resale Sheds at Cobram and Numurkah Resource Recovery Centres, all supporting a stronger circular economy.
Programs such as Council's Cloth Nappy and Personal Hygiene Product Rebate further help households reduce waste at the source.
Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the results demonstrate just how committed Moira residents are to wasting less and recycling more.
"Together, we're not just meeting targets, we're setting the standard," Dr Emonson said.
"The results after the first 12 months highlight the community's willingness to embrace the four-bin system and the positive impact it's having. We're very grateful for everyone's ongoing efforts to reduce waste from landfill."
