Major works starting at Mont Albert and Surrey Hills

Vic Department of Transport

Major works are underway at Mont Albert and Surrey Hills to remove 2 dangerous and congested level crossings and build a new, premium station.

The Union Road and Mont Albert Road level crossings will be removed by putting the rail line beneath the roads. In order to build the rail trench, crews will need to move and upgrade various signalling, power and communication lines in the rail corridor.

The first piling rig arrived at Lorne Parade Reserve in January and will soon start work to construct a 10m shaft for the lowering of a major water main, so that it runs below the bottom of the rail trench.

This water main is just one part of around 4.5km of underground services and 2.4km of drainage infrastructure that needs to be relocated and upgraded.

Utility relocations and upgrades will be a significant part of our work program throughout 2022 and will involve some disruptions, including a rail line closure for about two weeks in autumn.
