Major Works Underway At SRL Burwood

VIC Premier

Works are powering ahead on the Suburban Rail Loop - with the Allan Labor Government marking the start of major construction at the Burwood station site.

Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop Harriet Shing today announced contractor Terra Verde has moved onto site, as they prepare for tunnelling works on the northern section to kick off next year to connect Burwood and Box Hill.

A 19-metre-deep launch shaft has been built on site to support tunnelling works - where two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) will launch from Burwood towards Glen Waverley next year, with two more to launch towards Box Hill.

Following the relocation of underground services to make way for the twin tunnels, Terra Verde will now focus on building the infrastructure to support tunnelling works and the station box for the new underground station.

The future SRL station at Burwood will bring a train connection to Deakin University for the first time, making it faster and easier for tens of thousands of staff and students to access the campus every day.

The station will integrate with local tram and bus services, connecting more people within walking distance of jobs, housing, health and education services.

The new SRL Burwood station will also slash travel times.

  • A student from Laverton will be able to travel to Deakin University in 60 minutes using the new Suburban Rail Loop compared to up to 79 minutes in the car
  • While a lecturer living in Frankston will slash 26 minutes off their trip to Deakin University, travelling on a level crossing free line before connecting to the SRL.

Construction of the SRL is powering ahead - creating up to 8,000 direct local jobs, with more than 3,000 people already working on the project.

As stated by Minister for Suburban Rail Loop Harriet Shing

"The Suburban Rail Loop will slash travel times and cut congestion for busy families - while delivering 70,000 more homes within walking distance of jobs, healthcare, and Australia's largest universities."

As stated by Member for Ashwood Matt Fregon

"The new SRL station at Burwood will not only create faster and easier access to Deakin University, it will also deliver homes closer to jobs and services."

As stated by Member for Box Hill Paul Hamer

"The Suburban Rail Loop will transform Box Hill into one of Melbourne's most connected precincts - delivering faster travel and more jobs to our community."
