Man arrested after highway patrol officer assaulted in Unanderra

A man is assisting with inquiries after a highway patrol officer was assaulted this afternoon when responding to a driving complaint, NSW Police say.

About 3.40pm today, police responded to a Crime Stoppers call about a car doing burnouts in Leigh Crescent at Unanderra.

The highway patrol senior constable, attached to Southern Region, located the car at Leigh Crescent.

After speaking with a man, who allegedly became aggressive towards him, the senior constable had to use capsicum spray to subdue the 29-year-old

As a result of the altercation, the senior constable sustained serious facial injuries. He was taken to Wollongong Hospital for further checks.

The 29-year-old was arrested at the scene and was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he is assisting police with inquiries.
