Man arrested after seige in South Yarra

Stonnington Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man after a siege in South Yarra yesterday, Victoria Police say.

It is alleged a 23-year-old St Kilda man entered a shop on Toorak Road at about 5.30pm.

Investigators have been told the man was allegedly armed with jerry can and knife and made demands before a witness managed to get him out of the store and lock its doors.

The man was located and a stand-off ensued for some time before police negotiated a peaceful surrender.

He has been charged with attempted armed robbery, two counts of threats to kill, threats to damage property, assault with a weapon and use a controlled weapon without lawful excuse.

It is expected he will be presented to the Melbourne Magistrates’ court today.
