Man arrested after serious assault in Merewether

Police have charged a man following a serious assault in Merewether, NSW Police say.

Emergency services were called to Mitchell Street, Merewether, about 3.45am this morning today, following reports that a man had been assaulted.

A 28-year-old man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before he was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Officers from Newcastle Local Area Command attended and launched an investigation into the matter.

Following inquires; police arrested a 29-year-old man at John Hunter Hospital.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with assaulting causing grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail and will appear before Newcastle Local Court later today.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
