A man has been arrested following an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of an elderly woman in Merrylands earlier this week.
Officers from Cumberland Police Area Command commenced an investigation on Tuesday 15 April 2025 after reports an 83-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted by a man in Merrylands.
Police were told the man had helped the woman carry her shopping home before the assault.
The matter was then referred to State Crime Command's Sex Crimes Squad under Strike Force Bena.
Following an extensive investigation and a public appeal, police arrested a 41-year-old man at a unit complex on Harris Street, Fairfield, about 12.15pm today (Friday 18 April 2025).
He has been taken to Fairfield Police Station where he is expected to be charged with sexual assault and related offences.
Inquiries are ongoing.
