Police arrived on the scene of an alleged aggravated burglary within about six minutes of receiving the call this morning.
Officers responded to reports of a man allegedly breaking through the front door of the Savige Street home in Ascot Vale about 2.05am.
A man was arrested at the property and police seized a sledgehammer, an iron bar and an imitation firearm wrapped in a black sheet.
A woman and three children home at the time were not physically injured.
It is alleged the man mistakenly entered a different address to the one he intended.
He will be interviewed this morning.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation remains ongoing.
