Man assaulted, in critical condition at Walgett

A man has been charged after another man was hospitalised in a critical condition in the state's north earlier today.

About 12.30am (Thursday 18 February 2021), emergency services were called to Hope Street, Walgett, after a man was found outside a home with serious head and facial injuries.

The 41-year-old man was treated at the scene by paramedics and was taken to Walgett Hospital. He was placed in an induced coma, before being flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

He is reported to be in a critical condition.

Police have been told the man had been hit repeatedly in the head during a fight with another man.

Officers from Central North Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 40-year-old man at Walgett Hospital about 2.10pm. The man, known to the injured man, was taken to Walgett Police Station and charged with reckless grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail and will appear at Dubbo Local Court tomorrow (Friday 19 February 2021).
