Man assaulted; meat cleaver seized in Maitland

A man will appear in court today following an alleged assault involving a meat cleaver in Rutherford yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 6pm (Monday 17 December 2018), police were called to a unit on Churchill Crescent, Rutherford, near Maitland, following reports a 31-year-old man and a 33-year-old man were involved in an altercation.

The younger man sustained a serious laceration to his arm and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and established a crime scene.

Police seized a number of items that will undergo forensic examination.

The 33-year-old man was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail to appear in Maitland Local Court today (Tuesday 18 December 2018).
