Man assaulted near Newcastle, NSW

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted near Newcastle yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 2.30am yesterday, a 35-year-old man left a hotel on Beaumont Street, Hamilton, with friends.

An argument broke out with another man on Cleary Street and the 35-year-old man was assaulted.

He suffered head injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police have been told the man who may be able to assist with inquiries is of Caucasian appearance, in his 20s and was wearing jeans, a white t-shirt and black jacket at the time.

Police attached to the Newcastle City Local Area Command are appealing for any witnesses to the assault to come forward.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
