Man assaulted, one in custody, NSW

A man is in custody after another man was assaulted at Rathmines this morning, NSW Police say.

About 7.30am (Friday 18 May 2018) a man aged in his 40s who may have been suffering a medical episode, allegedly assaulted a 73-year-old man with an axe on Rosemary Road.

The older man was left with a shoulder wound. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital and remains in a stable condition. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District attended and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The men are known to each other.

The younger man was taken to Toronto Police Station. Inquiries are continuing.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
