Man breaks into a Hope Vale home

Cooktown Criminal Investigation Branch and Hope Vale Police are appealing for information after an intruder approached a woman in her home on December 8, Queensland Police say.

Around 4am a man went to the Flierl Street address and entered the home through a bedroom window.

A 21-year-old woman who was sleeping in the room at the time woke to find the man and began yelling at him.

He then fled through the window away from the residence.

The man is described as Aboriginal in appearance with a slim build, dark complexion and short cropped hair.

Detective Jett Stapleton from Cooktown CIB has appealed for any information that may assist police.

"Police are working with the community and will be conducting door knocks in the Hope Vale community over the following week to talk to residents about the incident and to discuss home security," Detective Stapleton said.

"As the summer heat is coming on, residents have a tendency to leave windows open and we are urging people to check security grills and locking mechanisms on their windows," he said.

Police would like to speak with anyone in the local community who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident to contact Hope Vale Police, Cooktown CIB, Policelink or Crime Stoppers.
