A man has been charged after allegedly breaking into a home and threatening police with a knife at Belmont today, NSW Police say.
About 11am today, a 29-year-old man allegedly broke into a home on the Pacific Highway, Belmont, while armed with a knife.
He was confronted by an 18-year-old male resident before running out of the home and entering the grounds of a High School.
The resident followed the offender on his pushbike, before the man turned around and threatened him with a knife, demanding the pushbike.
At this time police attached to the Marine Area Command were travelling on the Pacific Highway and observed the man with the knife.
Police stopped and challenged the man, who eventually placed the knife on the ground then attempted to run away.
After a short foot pursuit, the 29-year-old man was arrested, allegedly violently lashing out at police in the process.
The man was taken to Belmont Police Station where he was charged with aggravated break and enter with intent while armed; use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence; use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention; assault police and resist arrest.
He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court tomorrow.
