Man charged after assault, wielding a knife in Newcastle

A man will appear in court tomorrow charged with the alleged assault of another man in Newcastle today.

Shortly before 12pm (Saturday 13 January 2018), officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command were approached by a passer-by outside a café on Hunter Street, in relation to an earlier incident.

Police have been told a 23-year-old man armed with a knife was having an altercation with a 24-year-old man, not known to him, seated outside the café, NSW Police say.

The armed man has allegedly thrown the knife at the man, narrowly missing him.

Witnesses intervened and apprehended the armed man.

Officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command were alerted and arrested the 23-year-old man at the scene.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with wield knife in a public place, and two counts of common assault, and affray.

He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow, (Sunday 14 January 2018).
