Man Charged After Car Hits 220km/h in Melbourne West

Police have charged the alleged driver of a speeding vehicle in Melbourne's northwest last night.

Brimbank Highway Patrol officers caught sight of a Volkswagen Golf travelling along the Western Ring Road in Keilor Park about 11pm.

The Volkswagen was allegedly spotted at speeds exceeding 220km/h with no headlights on.

Police attempted to intercept the vehicle however the driver allegedly failed to stop and continued driving whilst weaving in and out of traffic.

Air Wing came in to assist and the Volkswagen was followed to Furlong Road in Sunshine where officers successfully used stop sticks.

The 18-year-old Tarneit man was taken into custody.

The Tarneit man was charged with:

  • reckless conduct endanger serious injury
  • dangerous driving while pursued by police
  • fail to stop on police direction
  • exceed speed limit by 45+
  • drive at a speed dangerous
  • drive in a manner dangerous
  • resist arrest

He will appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court today.
