Man charged after driving at police officer in North Sydney

A man has been charged after he allegedly attempted to run over an officer in North Sydney yesterday afternoon, NSW Police say.

About 4.30pm (Sunday 11 November 2018), a number of police officers were attending a Remembrance Day ceremony in St Leonards Park, North Sydney, when they heard a nearby vehicle causing a disturbance by revving loudly.

A constable approached the vehicle, which was parked on Ridge Street, and spoke with the man in the driver’s seat.

While speaking to the man, it is alleged he drove from the scene, resulting in the officer’s arm striking the door frame as the car drove away.

The vehicle turned around at the end of Ridge Street and began travelling west.

The man allegedly swerved at the officer, who had to take evasive action to avoid being struck.

A short time later officers found the Subaru Outback crashed into a concrete barrier on Albert Street, North Sydney, and a 25-year-old man was arrested.

He failed a roadside breath test.

He was taken to Chatswood Police Station where he was subject to a breath analysis, allegedly returning a reading of 0.139.

He was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, negligent driving, drive with middle range PCA, and drive manner dangerous.

He was refused bail to appear at Manly Local Court today (Monday 12 November 2018).

His licence was suspended.

The male police officer did not receive any physical injuries.
