Man charged after fatal crash at Balranald, Barrier Police District, NSW

A man will appear in court today following a fatal crash near Balranald last week, NSW Police say.

Shortly after 10pm on Monday 16 July 2018, two vehicles collided on the Sturt Highway, about 10km east of Balranald.

The vehicle heading east, being driven by a 24-year-old South Australian man and his passengers, a 22-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, collided with a vehicle travelling west, being driven by a 32-year-old St Marys man.

The rear male passenger of the eastbound vehicle died at the scene while the male driver and female passenger were airlifted to The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne in a critical condition.

The driver of the westbound vehicle was taken to Swan Hill Hospital suffering fractures to his ankle and elbow.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit, with assistance by officers from Barrier Police District established a crime scene and commenced investigations.

Following investigations, officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit, travelled to Melbourne where a 32-year-old man’s extradition to NSW was granted by the Melbourne Magistrate Court on Sunday 22 July 2018.

He was taken to Albury Police Station where he was charged with the following offences;

1) Dangerous driving occasioning death;

2) Negligent driving occasioning death;

3) Dangerous driving occasioning death grievous bodily harm;

4) Negligent driving occasioning death grievous bodily harm;

5) Cause bodily harm by misconduct;

6) Possess prohibited drug;

7) Two outstanding warrants for domestic related offences.

He was refused bail to appear at Albury Local Court today (Monday 23 July 2018).
