Man charged after officer assaulted in Wollongong

A man will appear in court today after allegedly assaulting a police officer following a traffic stop in Wollongong overnight.

About 12am today (Wednesday 29 August 2018), officers attached to Wollongong Traffic & Highway Patrol were conducting patrols in East Corrimal, NSW Police say.

The officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the area due to the manner in which it was being driven.

When the vehicle failed to stop a pursuit commenced with the officers activating their lights and sirens.

The vehicle eventually drove into a driveway in Cawley Street at Bellambi and the driver attempted to flee on foot.

When a senior constable attempted to arrest the driver, he has allegedly resisted, punching the officer in the face.

The man continued to assault the officer until further police attended and arrested him.

The 31-year-old man was conveyed to Wollongong Police Station where he refused a breath analysis.

He was then charged with assault police, hinder police and refuse breath test.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 29 August 2018).

The injured officer attended Wollongong Hospital where he was treated for facial injuries and discharged.
