Man charged after racially motivated assault and intimidation near Newcastle, NSW

A man has been charged over the assault and intimidation of two people near Newcastle, which police allege were racially motivated, NSW Police say.

About 8.45pm on Tuesday (24 July 2018), a 38-year-old man allegedly approached a 47-year-old man on George Street, Mayfield East, before slapping him in the face, kicking him in the leg and verbally abusing him.

The 47-year-old man called out for help and a 43-year-old woman came to his aid.

The man allegedly continued to verbally abuse the pair before another member of the public came to assist and he left the scene.

Officers from Newcastle City Police Area Command were notified of the incident and launched an investigation.

A short time later, police arrested the man on Maitland Road, Mayfield, where he was taken to Newcastle Police Station.

He was charged with common assault, two counts of stalk/intimidation intend fear, and breach of bail.

The man was refused bail and appeared at Newcastle Local Court yesterday (Wednesday 25 July 2018) where he was remanded to reappear at a future date.
