A man will face court today charged following an alleged wounding incident aboard a bus near Newcastle last night.
Shortly after 11pm yesterday (Wednesday 25 February 2026), emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway, Charlestown, following reports a bus driver had been assaulted.
At the scene, police were told a passenger aboard a bus had allegedly punched the driver before striking his hand with a knife and leaving the scene.
NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the driver before taking him to the John Hunter Hospital for further assessment.
Officers attached to Police Transport Command North Central commenced inquiries into the incident.
A short time later, officers stopped to speak with a man at a bus stop on nearby Pearson Avenue.
As police attempted to arrest the man, an officer was allegedly punched to the face before the man attempted to leave the scene.
A 23-year-old man was arrested following a brief foot pursuit and taken to Belmont Police Station.
There he was charged with five offences,
- Armed with intent commit indictable offence
- Reckless wounding
- Hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty
- Assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, and
- Not comply with direction given under subclause (1) or (2).
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today (Thursday 26 February 2026).
