Man charged following 1983 murder of Rodney Mitchell

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man today following the murder of Rodney Mitchell in Rowville in 1983, Victoria Police say.

A 65-year-old Tocumwal man has been charged with murder, three counts of false imprisonment and six counts of rape.

He will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.

Mitchell was in a parked vehicle at Police Paddocks with a woman on 23 May, 1983 when they were attacked.

He was shot and died as a result of his injuries.

The Police Paddocks were a popular parking area at the time of the incident.

The charges also relate to two other separate incidents at the same location, one in 1980 and one in 1983, where a woman was sexually assaulted and her partner falsely imprisoned.

Today’s charges are as a result of a long and dedicated investigation by Homicide Squad detectives, including a recent review by current members of the Homicide Cold Case team.
