Man charged following aggravated carjacking in Wellington

Police have charged a man following an alleged aggravated carjacking and other offences that occurred in the states central west yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 11.30am yesterday a woman parked her milk truck on Arthur Street, Wellington, and was sitting in the vehicle when she was approached by a man.

The man allegedly opened the door to the truck and removed the keys from the ignition. The woman pushed on the horn to draw attention but she was overpowered and pulled from the vehicle.

Members of the public rushed to her aid as her vehicle was stolen.

Later that day, about 12pm, a man was found by residents on a property south of Wellington, on Mountain Valley Road, Neurea.

The residents allegedly found the man going through property in a shearing shed before he got back into the milk truck and left the scene.

He was followed by the residents and was seen to allegedly run over a sheep that were on the property before crashing through a boundary fence into a neighbouring property.

It’s alleged he set fire to the truck before he was apprehended by the two Neurea residents and the property owner.

Police were contacted and prior to their arrival it’s alleged the 25-year-old man broke free from the residents and ran to a vehicle where he armed himself with an axe.

He threatened the residents before running from the property but was found a short time later by police near the Mountain Valley Road property.

He was arrested after a brief struggle and taken to Wellington Police Station where he was charged with numerous offences including aggravated carjacking, steal motor vehicle, used weapon to avoid apprehension and resist arrest.

He was refused bail to appear at Dubbo Local Court today.
