Man Charged in Redfern Aggravated Sexual Assault

A man will face court after a woman was allegedly assaulted in Sydney's inner city overnight.

Just after 1.45am today (Thursday 16 July 2026), police were called to Everleigh Street, Redfern, following reports of a woman was assaulted by an unknown man.

Officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command were told a 19-year-old woman was walking on the street when an unknown man approached and allegedly assaulted her and attempted to perform sexual act.

Police were further told when a local resident came to assist the woman, the man left the scene on foot.

The woman was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for facial and head injuries before being taken to a hospital for further treatment.

A short time later, police, with the assistance from several members of public, arrested a 41-year-old man on Abercrombie Street, Redfern.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with aggravate sex assault- inflict actual bodily harm on victim, carry out sexual act with another without consent, reckless wounding, stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm, and common assault.

He was refused bail to appear at Bail Division Court 7 tomorrow (Friday 17 July 2026).
