Man Charged in Surry Hills Shooting Murder

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man for his alleged involvement in the murder of a man in Surry Hills.

About 7.45pm on Friday 22 November 2024, emergency services were called to a service station on Cleveland Street in Surry Hills following reports of a shooting.

On arrival, officers attached to South Sydney Police Area Command found a man suffering fatal gunshot wounds.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died at the scene.

The man has since been identified as 31-year-old Niddal Acherkouk.

A short time later, emergency services were called to Kensington Road in Kensington, following reports of a car fire which police treated as linked.

Local police established crime scenes at both locations and commenced initial inquiries before the investigation was handed over to the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, supported by the NSW Crime Commission, under Strike Force Moorlands.

Following extensive inquiries, on Wednesday 4 February 2026, strike force detectives arrested a 33-year-old man at Goulburn Police Station.

He was charged with participate criminal group and refused bail to appear in Bail Division Local Court 3 tomorrow (Thursday 5 February 2026).

Police will allege in court that the man helped arrange for unknown individuals to destroy the cars used in the shooting.

Investigations under Strike Force Moorlands continue.
