Man Charged in Sydney South Text Scam, Theft

A man will face court over an alleged text scam and thefts in Sydney's south.

In February 2025, officers attached to Sutherland Shire Police Area Command commenced an investigation following reports of an alleged romance scam in the Yarrawarrah area.

Police were told since 2019, a 49-year-old woman provided financial help to a 49-year-old man – known to her – multiple times and he never paid her back. The estimated total amount was $300,000.

Following investigations, about 8.45am yesterday (Wednesday 3 September 2025), police executed a search warrant at a home on Mahogany Avenue, Macquarie Park, where they arrested the 49-year-old man.

Police seized a number of electronic devices, which police believe were allegedly stolen from a business in Crows Nest in June 2025.

He was taken to Gladesville Police Station where he was charged with dishonestly obtain financial advantage etc by deception (three counts), use false document to obtain financial advantage (three counts), use carriage service to menace/harass/offend, steal property as clerk/servant less than or equal to $2000 (two counts), and furnish false information statement to license (two counts).

Police will allege in court the man used fraudulent documentation and text messaged victims to secure the money.

He was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today (Thursday 4 September 2025).
