Man charged over armed robbery in Windale

A man has been charged over an armed robbery which occurred in the Lake Macquarie region in July, NSW Police say.

About 3.15am (Thursday 26 July 2018), two men approached a 24-hour service station on Lake Street.

They approached the locked front doors and began to smash the glass with an axe.

The 22-year-old console operator locked himself in a store room when the men broke through the doors.

The men went to the console area and stole the till, cigarettes and food before leaving the store.

Police from Lake Macquarie Police District attended and established a crime scene which was forensically examined.

Following inquiries, about 3.30pm yesterday (Friday 5 October 2018), a 21-year-old man was arrested for an unrelated matter.

He was subsequently charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon.

He was also charged with drive manner dangerous, take and drive conveyance, and drive whilst unlicensed never held, which relate to his arrest yesterday.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Saturday 6 October 2018).

Inquiries into the armed robbery continue.
