Man charged over assault in Wilcannia

Police have charged a man after a serious assault at Wilcannia over the weekend which left a man hospitalised in a critical condition, NSW Police say.

About 6pm on Sunday 14 October 2018, officers from the Barrier Police District were called to Ross Street Wilcannia, following reports of an assault.

On arrival a 41-year-old man was found with a serious head wound.

He was taken to the Wilcannia Health Service in a stable condition, and subsequently airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition.

A 26-year-old man was spoken to at the scene and police continued with their inquiries.

The men are known to each other.

About 11am today (Wednesday 17 October 2018) police arrested the 26-year-old man and conveyed him to Wilcannia Police Station.

He was later charged with recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm and granted conditional bail to appear at Wilcannia Local Court on Wednesday 21 November 2018.

The injured man remains in Royal Adelaide Hospital undergoing treatment.
