Man charged over assault on bus in Wollongong

A man has been charged after a bus driver was allegedly assaulted in Wollongong tonight, NSW Police say.

About 6pm today, police will allege a 44-year-old man boarded a bus on Burrelli Street.

The man allegedly became aggressive towards other passengers and threatened the bus driver.

The driver, a 59-year-old man, requested police assistance and pulled the bus over on Corrimal Street, Wollongong.

The bus driver was allegedly assaulted and had a beer bottle thrown at him, which damaged the bus window.

He suffered a laceration of his hand, wrist and forearm and had his watch broken.

The 44-year-old man was arrested nearby and taken to Wollongong Police Station.

He was charged with assault, intimidation, drink alcohol on bus, malicious damage, resist arrest, and assault police.

The man was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 3 October 2017.
