Man charged over attempted armed robbery of taxi driver, NSW

A man will face court today charged with robbery and firearms offences following an investigation into the attempted armed robbery of a taxi driver at the weekend, NSW Police say.

Just before 5am on Sunday (22 July 2018), a taxi driver picked up two men on Saltash Street, Yagoona, for a fare to Guildford.

As the taxi approached Broughton Street on Orchardleigh Road, Old Guildford, the driver was told to pull over and one of the men allegedly threatened him with a pistol.

During a brief struggle, the firearm was discharged, with the round passing through the sun visor and windscreen.

The driver has then fled the moving vehicle to seek assistance, and the two men left the scene on foot.

Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command attended and despite an extensive search of the area by the Dog Unit, the men were not located.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad established Strike Force Koorala to investigate the incident.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives arrested a 23-year-old man at Bankstown Police Station just before 8pm yesterday (Wednesday 25 July 2018).

Following the arrest, investigators, assisted by South West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad, executed a search warrant at a home at Yagoona, where they seized items relevant to the investigation.

The Yagoona man was charged with in company assault with intent to rob while armed dangerous weapon and discharge firearm etc intend cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court today (Thursday 26 July 2018).

Investigations under Strike Force Koorala are continuing.

Police are urging anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Koorala detectives to call Crime Stoppers.
