Man Charged Over Boating Crash That Killed Two Teens in Oxley

A man will face court next month following an investigation into the death of two teenagers in a boating crash near Tamworth last year.

About 5pm on Tuesday 27 December 2022, emergency services were called to a caravan park on Ski Gardens Road in Rushes Creek – about 60km north-west of Tamworth – following reports of a boating crash.

On arrival, officers attached to Oxley Police District were told two teenagers – aged 13 and 14 – being towed behind the boat on an inflatable had struck a tree stump.

Members of the public performed CPR before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived; however, they could not be revived.

The driver of the boat – a 73-year-old man – was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established, which was examined by specialist forensic police, and the boat and other items relevant to the investigation were seized.

Following inquiries, a 73-year-old man was issued a future Court Attendance Notice for operate recreational vessel negligently cause death/grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear at Tamworth Local Court on Monday 17 July 2023.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
