Man charged over brawl in Newcastle

Police have charged a man after an altercation at a hotel in Sandgate overnight, NSW Police say.

Shortly after 11.30pm on Saturday 17 December 2016, a group of people had gathered for a birthday party at a hotel in Sandgate Road.

Two men were escorted from the premises by hotel staff after they were involved in a verbal altercation. Several hotel patrons followed the men outside and a brawl ensued with up to 20 people involved.

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command were contacted and attended a short time later locating up to 15 people still in the area.

Many had suffered injuries that ranged from minor lacerations to a possible broken jaw.

Three people were conveyed to John Hunter Hospital with a variety of injuries.

An 18-year-old man was identified as having being involved in the brawl and he was arrested.

The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was later charged with affray and behaving in an offensive manner.

He has been granted conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on 19 January 2017.

Police investigations into the incident continue with the two unknown men and several others still to be identified.

Investigators have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact police immediately.
