Man charged over double fatality in Southern Region

A man has been charged after two women died and six other people were injured, following a three-vehicle crash in the state’s Southern Region last month, NSW Police say.

About 7.45am on Friday 25 May 2018, emergency services were called to the intersection of Boundary Lane and the Barton Highway, Wallaroo, after reports a Toyota Landcruiser and Dodge Journey had collided head-on.

Police were told the Toyota then crashed into a Mazda 6 station wagon as a result of the collision.

Two female passengers of the Dodge, aged 36 and 34, died at the scene.

The driver of the Dodge, a 39-year-old man, two girls, aged 16 and 22-months, and a boy, aged 8, were taken to Canberra Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 12-year-old girl was taken to Canberra Hospital before being flown to Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick, where she continues to receive treatment.

The driver, and sole occupant, of the Toyota Landcruiser, a 65-year-old man, suffered non- life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mazda 6 station wagon, a 58-year-old female, and two male passengers, were uninjured. All three drivers underwent mandatory testing in hospital.

Officers from The Hume Police District, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit, established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the incident.

Following inquiries, the 65-year-old man attended Queanbeyan Police Station and spoke with investigators.

He was arrested and charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous, and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm - drive manner dangerous.

His licence was also suspended.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Yass Local Court on Friday 17 August 2018.
