Man charged over shooting in Mayfield

A man has been charged with firearm and drug matters following a shooting incident at Mayfield last week, NSW Police say.

During the afternoon of Thursday 26 January 2017, following an earlier altercation a 20-year-old man attended Baker Street and allegedly discharged two rounds from a handgun.

Police will allege that the gunman fired twice at a male and female that were standing on the opposite side of Baker Street.

The male and female were not injured during the incident while the gunman was seen walking towards Hanbury Street.

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command were alerted to the incident and established a crime scene at the location.

Investigators later seized a handgun, cash, cannabis and MDMA from a unit in Hanbury Street and continued with their investigation.

About 2.35pm today, a 20-year-old man was arrested at a unit in Hanbury Street and conveyed to Newcastle Police Station.

He was later charged with discharge firearm with intent to cause GBH, discharge firearm in public place, supply prohibited drug (MDMA), supply prohibited drug (Cannabis), deal with the proceeds of crime and other firearm offences.

He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow.
