Man charged over Tingha fire in northern NSW

A man has been charged with deliberately lighting a fire near Tingha in northern NSW, NSW Police say.

Police from New England Local Area Command, with assistance from the Rural Fire Service (RFS), have been investigating more than 25 grass and bushfires in the Tingha area between August and December 2016, which they allege were deliberately lit.

Following extensive inquiries, a 19-year-old man was arrested when he attended Inverell Police Station last night yesterday.

The man, who is a volunteer fire fighter, was charged with intentionally cause fire and be reckless to its spread. The charge relates to a bushfire on Wednesday 28 September 2016.

He was released on conditional bail to appear in Inverell Local Court on Thursday 13 April 2017.
