Man charged with more than 20 offences including assault police, NSW

A man has been charged with more than 20 offences following an ongoing theft and fraud investigation in the Lake Illawarra Police District.

Strike Force Yaralla was established in December 2018 to investigate motor vehicle thefts, property theft and fraud offences in the area.

On Tuesday 4 December 2018, a stolen Volkswagen Golf was involved in a crash on Daintree Way, Albion Park, leaving a female passenger with critical injuries. The driver of the stolen car ran from the scene.

Detectives from Strike Force Yaralla commenced inquiries which led to officers from Sutherland Police Area Command to attend a property in Menai about 6.20am on Saturday 22 December 2018.

Officers attempted to arrest a 30-year-old man, however, he allegedly became violent and assaulted the two officers.

NSW Ambulance paramedics attended, and the man was taken to hospital for assessment.

The two officers were not seriously hurt.

About 10am today (Thursday 27 December 2018), Strike Force detectives attended St George Police Station where they arrested the 30-year-old man who had been released from hospital.

He was charged with two outstanding warrants and a further 23 offences including take and drive conveyance without consent, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, fail to stop and assist following a motor vehicle collision, drive while disqualified, larceny, intimidation and assault police.

He was refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Bail Court tomorrow (Friday 28 December 2018).
