A man has been charged with assaulting police, a police pursuit, drink driving and other offences after allegedly doing a burnout in front of a Traffic and Highway Patrol vehicle, NSW Police say.
About 3pm yesterday, police were at Shoalhaven Heads when the driver of a Ford Fairlane allegedly conducted a burnout in front of the police car.
Police activated lights and sirens in an attempt to pull the vehicle over, with a pursuit called after the Ford failed to stop.
Police pursued the vehicle through to Gerringong and on to the Princes Highway towards Kiama where road spikes were deployed.
Despite significant tyre damage, the car continued to Albion Park Rail where it was stopped in traffic and police ordered the man from the vehicle.
It is alleged he threatened police with a knife before placing it on top of his vehicle. He was then placed under arrest, allegedly resisting police and striking an officer in the face.
The officer suffered minor bruising.
The man underwent a breath test which returned a positive result.
He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he provided a breath analysis sample of 0.136.
He was charged with police pursuit (Skye's law), drive in manner dangerous, aggravated burnout, use offensive weapon to avoid apprehension, assault police, resist arrest, drive with mid-range PCA, unaccompanied driver and stealing.
The 34-year-old man appeared at Wollongong Local Court today and remains bail refused to reappear tomorrow.
