Man critical after grass fire in Caroona

A man is in a critical condition in hospital following a grass fire in the state’s North West yesterday, NSW Police say.

Police have been told a fire started in a paddock on a rural property on Coonabarabran Road, Caroona, about 5.45pm today.

A 36-year-old man driving a front-end loader attempted to assist to extinguish the blaze; however, in the process he sustained severe burns to his body.

The man was treated at the scene before being airlifted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.

Investigations by Oxley Local Area Command are ongoing.

Safe Work NSW has been notified.
