Man dies in housefire at Lake Illawarra

A man has died in a house fire in the Lake Illawarra region yesterday.

About 1.40pm (Thursday 7 July 2022), emergency services were called to a home on Leicester Street, Berkeley, following reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW officers attended and found the home well-alight.

The fire was extinguished and, following a search of the premises, the body of a man was found inside.

The body is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be that of the occupant, a man aged in his 70s.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District have commenced an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fire; however, initial inquiries indicate the fire is not suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
