Man Dies in Surry Hills Fall, Critical Incident Declared

A critical incident investigation is underway after a man died after falling from a unit block in Surry Hills overnight.

About 8.05pm yesterday (Sunday 24 August 2025), police were called to a grocery store on Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, following reports of a robbery.

Officers attached to Surry Hills Police Area Command arrived and were told a masked man had threatened a staff member with a knife before stealing cash and leaving the scene with a woman.

No injuries were reported.

Following inquiries, police attended a unit block on Belvoir Street, Surry Hills, about 9.10pm yesterday.

When police entered the unit block a man – believed to be involved in the earlier alleged armed robbery – ran from police towards a unit balcony before jumping and falling five stories.

Police immediately treated the man before he was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to St Vincent's Hospital where he later died.

He is yet to be formally identified; however, he is believed to be aged in his 40s.

During the incident, police also arrested a 21-year-old woman – who allegedly closed the unit door on officers after the man ran from police – before taking her to Surry Hills Police Station.

She was charged with robbery while armed with dangerous weapon, destroy or damage property less than $2,000 and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.

The 21-year-old was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Local Court 7 today (Monday 25 August 2025).

A crime scene has been established and a critical incident team from Inner West Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

The investigation will be subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
