Man drowns in Windang

A report will be prepared for the Coroner after a man drowned off Windang Island yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 10pm (Saturday 31 March 2018), emergency services were called to Windang Island, near Lake Illawarra following reports a fisherman has been swept into the water.

Witnesses attempted to throw the man a life ring but were unsuccessful and he drifted further from shore.

An Air Ambulance helicopter sighted the man in the water a short time later and winched the man to shore, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The man has not been formally identified but he is believed to be a man in his 40s from Sydney.

While the man was wearing an inflatable life vest at the time, police from Lake Illawarra Police District will be investigating all circumstances surrounding the incident for the information of the Coroner.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
