Man in court over incident involving surf lifeguard - Cronulla

A man will appear in court next month following an incident involving a surf lifeguard at a beach in Cronulla over the weekend.

About 3.15pm (Saturday 26 October 2019), a 34-year-old surf lifeguard received reports from a colleague, that two men were in the water with a speargun. The lifeguard directed the men to leave the water, and they refused.

A 20-year-old man exited the water with a spear gun, and allegedly threatened the 34-year-old man.

Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command were alerted and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 20-year-old man at the scene.

The Bankstown man was taken to Sutherland Police Station where he was charged with attempt stalk/intimidate intend fear of harm, behave in offensive manner in/near public place, and use offensive language in/near public place.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Thursday 21 November 2019.
