Man in critical condition after Smithfield crash

A man is in a critical condition following a crash in Sydney's west today.

About 3.30am (Friday 6 August 2021), emergency services were called to the Cumberland Highway near Brenan Street, Smithfield, following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command attended and found a Toyota Yaris had crashed into a barrier and flipped onto its roof.

Police were told the driver of the Toyota, a man believed to be in his 30s, attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was arrested a short distance away.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

The passenger of the Toyota, a male believed to be in his 30s, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.

A crime scene was established, which will be examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Traffic on the Cumberland Highway is affected in both directions and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
