A 47 year old Moonah man is in police custody and assisting with enquiries after an incident in Maple Avenue, Moonah, overnight, Tasmania Police say.
Acting Inspector Andrew Bennett said today that the man was taken into custody about 7.30am this morning and is currently receiving medical treatment following concerns for his welfare.
The man surrendered to police without incident. The man has no injuries as a result of his arrest. No police officers were injured despite the man firing upon several responding officers during the police response.
Police were called to residence about 5.30pm last night following a report a person had been attacked by a dog.
The man, armed with a firearm, barricaded himself in his residence and police spent 14 hours negotiating with him before successfully peacefully resolving the incident.
"Police would like to thank local residents who assisted us by evacuating their residences and being supportive of our efforts to resolve the incident peacefully," Acting Inspector Bennett said.
The dog has been removed from the property by Glenorchy City Council to be cared for while the man is receiving treatment. The dog is unharmed.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
