Man pulled from water, NSW

A man has been pulled from the water at a beach south of Sydney today, NSW Police say.

Emergency Services were called to a beach at Port Kembla, just before 1pm (Sunday 7 January 2018), after a 33-year-old man was pulled from the water.

Police have been told the man was swimming before getting into trouble.

He was rescued by members of the public who commenced CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

The man was taken to Wollongong Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command are continuing their inquiries.

The incident is a timely reminder for swimmers to make safety the priority when in, on or around the water this summer.

Authorities advise the following tips for keeping safe:

* Always swim between the red and yellow flags

* Read and observe the safety signs

* Ask a lifesaver/lifeguard for safety advice

* Always swim with someone else and look out for each other

* Always supervise children around the water

* Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs

* Learn how to identify a rip

* If you need help, stay calm and attract attention

* Always wear a lifejacket while boating or rock-fishing

* If witnessing an in-water emergency, call Triple Zero (000)

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
