Man to face court over 1997 Canowindra fatal crash, NSW

A man will face court today after being extradited from South Australia in relation to a 1997 fatal crash in Central West NSW, NSW Police say.

It was Thursday 16 January 1997 when a Holden Commodore sedan and an Izuzu pantech collided near the intersection of Tilga and Ferguson streets Canowindra on 16 January 1997.

A 21-year-old man, travelling in the back of the Commodore, died at the scene.

Two outstanding First Instance Warrants were issued at Cowra Local Court on the 6 March, 1997after a man failed to appear to answer charges of dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.

A review of the investigation was conducted this year by the Crash Investigation Unit, culminated in officers travelling to South Australia on 24 October 2018 to seek the extradition of a now 39-year-old man.

Yesterday the 39-year-old man was returned to NSW and charged by virtue of the outstanding first instance warrants.

He was refused bail prior to his appearance in Central Local Court.
