Management of Maximum Security Unit prisoners

We don't discuss the management of individual prisoners, however decisions relating to prisoners who are in Maximum Security Units are very carefully considered, with input from officers, multi-disciplinary teams including health experts.

Transitioning MSU prisoners to lower classification accommodation is always accompanied by an Intensive Management Plan (IMP) which identifies triggers and strategies to proactively manage the individual.

These plans are drafted in consultation with the staffing group who will be managing the prisoner to ensure they are aware of the specifics of managing the risks associated with the individual.

Queensland Corrective Services has an obligation under the Human Rights Act to regularly review and assess prisoners who are held in restrictive conditions such as MSUs to ensure their incarceration is appropriate and legal, noting that better security outcomes are often achieved through reintegration into a lower classification environment with an IMP in place to proactively manage the individual.
