Proceeding a landmark decisionin WA Electoral Commission history in December 2017, local South Fremantle resident& Independent South Ward Candidate Marija Vujcic stood up for the ‘ordinarypeople of South Ward’ and won! Marija challenged the WA Electoral Commission eligibility,winning her challenge in the Fremantle Magistrate’s Court and will continue to standup for the people of South Ward in the 2018 South Ward By-Election, which willbe held on 16th March 2018.
In a David and Goliathstruggle, the fresh 2018 election for South Ward is a win for all residents. ‘Our democracy and due process took a hit when the City ofFremantle let the wrong slide and I am proud to have initiated change in ourlocal precinct by challenging the eligibility of their decision. The WAEC onlycame on board after I lodged an invalidity complaint. I lost the election but that was not thereason for the challenge. It was a difficult thing to do because there was noprecedent to guide me. It was just theright thing to do. I am a candidate again and proud to be knocking on your doorfor your support.Your issues and concerns will get myattention. A truly progressive council needs to hear your voice and I am hereto make sure you (the majority) are heard.’
Issues Marija will be addressing as anIndependent Candidate include restoring the financial health of the Fremantle CityCouncil, which has been damaged by the current council; the apparent lack ofcost benefit analysis with regards to many of the Council decisions, fromselling off carparks to local developers, to approving urban developmentprojects that only a minority of people will benefit from; keeping jobs inFremantle and the preservation of industry throughout the Fremantle area, particularlythe Fremantle Port; and opposing the outer harbour development which will stripjobs from Fremantle and cost local Fremantle businesses valuable revenue fromthe port. Other local issues, such as traffic calming, anti-social behavior, seniorservices, maintenance of our footpaths and verges, and ranger services are issueslocal South Ward residents have been asking Marija to address if and when sheis voted in as Councillor for South Ward.
Marijahas been an active member of the community for over 25 years, taking on manyroles, including Chairperson of the North Perth Migrant Resource Centre,serving on the Women’s Advisory Council to the Premier, helping the StateSchool Teachers with their fight for better pay and sitting on her children’sschool P&C committee. Marija fights for the causes she is passionate aboutand has a long history of contributing to her community.
Asa mother and grandmother, Marija cares about the environment and will worktowards sustainability projects that will assist not only the City ofFremantle, but also the wider community.
